No more delays to Dalymount, new stadium must be built
Dublin Central Labour TD Marie Sherlock has said that Dublin City Council must get on with starting the redevelopment of Dalymount Stadium.
Speaking in advance of a vote by Dublin City Councillors on the loan to fund the project, Deputy Sherlock said:
“10 years on from Dublin City Council’s rescue of Dalymount Stadium, it is vital that there are no further delays to the re-development.
“The protracted process of trying to agree the funding model between Dublin City Council and the Government has led to too many wasted years and now a very substantial price tag of €63m which has risen many times over.
“Unfortunately, the twists and turns in how to fund the redevelopment from the proposed sale of Tolka Park, to the impact of the development of Phibsborough shopping centre and waiting for Government to stump up their share has contributed to this cost. Already, some of the design has been pared back in recognition of these costs. It is crucial now that there are no further delays.
“While Dalymount is home to Bohemians Football Club, this project has been about more than just one club. Redeveloping Dalymount is about ensuring we have a fantastic sports facility in the heart of the Dublin’s Northside that is easily accessible, has community facilities and that recognises the important history of football in the area.
“As a proud Bohemian Football Club member and public representative, I know many fans want the redevelopment to happen without delay. Matches in Dalymount are sold out on a regular basis. If we are serious about expanding interest in League of Ireland games and broadening support for clubs, the extra attendance must be accommodated.
“I want to give huge credit to Dublin City Council officials on the ground and to Bohemian Football Club in getting the project to this stage. As fans, as taxpayers, and as Dublin city residents, it is in all our interests to ensure this project can now proceed as soon as possible.”
