The Labour Party welcomes green light for MetroLink

Labour TDs Duncan Smith, Marie Sherlock and Ciarán Ahern have strongly welcomed the news that An Coimisiún Pleanála has approved the long-awaited MetroLink rail line, describing it as a transformative project for Dublin that must now proceed without delay.

Deputy Duncan Smith, TD for Dublin Fingal East, said the decision was a landmark moment for sustainable transport:

“This is hugely welcome news for our community. MetroLink will be a game-changer for those who live and work near Dublin Airport and along the M1 corridor. Swords has been chronically underserved for public transport, this will be a new era of efficient, sustainable, and accessible transportation for Dublin.

“We welcome the approval of MetroLink and hope for a smooth onward process leading to the swift implementation of this transformative project. Government need to ensure the project is delivered on time and cost effectively. The time for action is now.”

Deputy Marie Sherlock, TD for Dublin Central, , echoed this welcome while raising concerns about delivery:

“I strongly welcome this progress. It will be a brilliant for Dublin Central and for the city as a whole. But Government must stump up the necessary funding. I remain concerned that the National Development Plan may hold back the pace of this project.

“I look forward to reading the details of the railway order and to ensuring that the interests of local communities are properly protected. The people of Dublin Central want to see progress, but it must be delivered fairly and transparently, without yet more delays.”

Deputy Ciarán Ahern, Labour’s Transport Spokesperson  said:

“MetroLink must be the flagship project for this Government. It is essential to addressing gridlock in our capital city and connecting our airport to the city centre.

“We cannot continue with piecemeal investment in public transport. Alongside the expedited delivery of MetroLink, Labour is calling for a feasibility study to continue the metro line from the city centre out to South West of Dublin City. If we are serious about reducing car dependency and tackling the climate crisis, then future investment must be prioritised.”
